I introduced a friend to the Bridle Path walk today and her keen powers of observation meant that she spotted a mark on a rock which I would have completely missed. It looks like a blast mark – and it has a pin type hole in it. So we guess these rocks were blasted off the side of the hill. There’s a note about continued rock blasting by the entrance to another track that goes off the Bridle Path. In fact there was a loud blast when I walked up the hill last week (it was the only thing that made me stop for a second or two!).

And adding my two cents of observation from afar… the rock type appears to be Basalt (a mafic igneous rock) too — not easy stuff to break up except along preexisting fractures and therefore the blasting.
