The street party for the Festival of Lights was held tonight in Lyttelton. I went along with the camera and tripod and was totally unprepared for the number of cars and people. It’s a popular night out, even on a short winter’s day.

The locals really get into the spirit of the event, lighting up their homes with fairy lights and LED lights. It’s very pretty. I arrived just as the fireworks was going off – they were pretty spectacular and boy what a loud boom they made.

All I can say is I am very impressed with Kiwi ingenuity – definitely looks like a fun festival for everyone! And here on my side of the planet city event planners think they need to have huge budgets in order to have festivals and in a tight economy our festivals have been few a far between and by comparison quite lack-luster too (putting it mildly), and I suspect having a festival of lights similar to this one has never crossed their minds, not even remotely… *sigh*

All Kiwis should consider themselves fortunate to have event planners that know how to think!

And as always, I love these wonderful photos of yours as they are a great inspiration!
