It’s been months since I’ve been to Lyttelton. So I decided it was time to check it out today. I can’t recall the last time I was in Lyttelton – but I do remember feeling a bit low after my visit there – so much has gone.
That is an interesting perspective. We just moved from the US 3.5 weeks ago, as a family of 6. We had never been to New Zealand and decided to wait until after we arrived to find permanent housing. We have been in a vacation rental while waiting for our shipping container.
Interestingly we signed a lease on a house in Lyttelton yesterday. After looking at countless houses in countless neighborhoods we visited Lyttelton as a family. We had never been before and certainly have no understanding of what has been lost but as an outsider I was immediately struck by how “up” the area made me feel. There is so much excitement in that little town. We have been back several times since and felt the same way. When a house large enough for our family became available it seemed obvious that it would be a great place to be.
Here is to much rebuilding in 2013!

Welcome to Christchurch and New Zealand Justyn. I think it’s wonderful that you’ve found a new home in Lyttelton. There’s no doubting there is amazing community spirit in Lyttelton. A few years back I’d actually contemplating moving to Lyttelton myself, but fate decided I was to meet a lovely man in Mt Pleasant – just over the hill.

Its a pity the only photos you are showing here are of the rather shabby areas in post-quake Lyttelton. The petanque club is on the site of the Albion Hotel which was there for 100 or so years. The last business to occupy the Albion was Ground Cafe and Deli.

I rather like the Petanque club and the photos of the children’s artworks. Rather than being ‘shabby’ I see these as examples of community spirit and renewal – much like the gap filler projects in Christchurch. Having said that, there’s no denying that the centre of the town has lost so much, and I’m looking forward to seeing it rebuilt.

I must admit Lyttelton that we knew looks very tatty in these photographs.

In my book any place with a petanque club is a better place for it. They may be common in Metropolitan France but here in England they tend to be in the more upmarket neighborhoods. I too would see these as signs of a place where community matters.
