A close-up image of several votive candles lit inside a darkened space, with soft glowing flames illuminating the surrounding area.

As a nation, as a city, we will never forget the terrible events of this week and the people who have lost their lives, their homes, their jobs and their businesses, their sense of security and safety, their sense of normality.

This photo for today was one I took just one month ago during a lunchtime excursion into the city. It was raining and I decided to take cover in the Cathedral and while there I took many photos of the votive candles inside the cathedral.

Some day, a long time from now, when the rebuilding is completed, I will go back to the Cathedral and light a candle for those who can’t.

God bless everyone.

I watched a newsreel tonight of your mayor and the way he is conducting himself as rescue and restoration efforts continue. He appears to be drawing strength from the strength of the citizens of your city. It is amazing to observe the courage of all of your people under such trying circumstances. It is my hope that the city will be swiftly rebuilt and that the wounds of the people will be restored to good health. My condolences and sympathy for all those who have suffered the death of loved ones.

Michelle, this is a beautiful tribute photo. I judged a dog show in Christchurch many many years ago and of course, like any visitor to the city, remember the beautiful cathedral. The television coverage has been so sad, so tragic to see and I agree with Kate, the courage and bravery of everyone is incredible.

I’m so sorry for those who have died, and for those left behind without them and of course for those still waiting for news.

Bravo to you for getting these photos to us at this time.

love to you and your partner. Jilly xxx

I am not really one for candles, other than when the power is off. That said it is a beautiful thought, the cathedral has featured in many stories over here in the UK. NZ may be the New World and far off but I know that the events of the past week have shocked and saddened everyone I have spoken to here in Yorkshire.
