I have a habit of finding great subjects to photograph and then realising the sun is coming from the wrong direction (I am fanatical about lighting!). But then you just walk around the subject, and you see a whole other shot – just like this one. I rather like this one, it’s Captain James Cook looking over the square with the Forsyth Barr building in the background. I’ll come back when the lighting is right and take a front on shot.

    Cook did a lot for NZ…but what about the Maoris?! An interesting shot…love the blue sky! Its good to see a fellow Kiwi’s blog. I was born in New Plymouth in Taranaki but now am in Europe!

    Yes! Wonderful observation. Of course there has to be something on the back side. We should look, more frequently.

    One day I will map all Capitan Cook statues in NZ. In the meantime I’ll keep a mental record of your image. Me to in many ocasions, I’d try to look at what the Statue looks at rather then its (in many cases) righteous pose and admonishing gesture).
