The Nurses’ Memorial Chapel is a tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of nurses who lost their lives during World War I and the 1918 influenza pandemic. Built in 1927, it honours the memory of the ten New Zealand nurses who perished when the troopship Marquette was torpedoed in 1915, including three nurses from Canterbury. It also commemorates the nurses who died while serving their communities during the devastating flu outbreak. The chapel stands as a unique and solemn acknowledgment of the critical role nurses played in times of crisis, embodying their dedication and the ultimate sacrifices they made for others.
