Kate Sheppherd House at 83 Clyde Rd is an historic villa that was lived in by the leader of the New Zealand suffrage movement, Kate Sheppherd. There was an open day today and as I’d never been before I went along with a friend who had recently discovered she had a shared relative with Kate Sheppherd via Kate’s mother.

The villa is lovely with beautiful established grounds and a tennis court. Inside there are lots of displays about the suffragettes fight to get New Zealand women the vote, plus further information about the women’s rights movement in New Zealand and the gains that have been made.

I’d highly recommend a visit.

Glad you enjoyed the photos Jan. I don’t think it was previously open to the public, not until it was purchased by the New Zealand government and then re-opened in December 2020.
