After featuring the Chester Street East community garden on the blog, I was informed by a Facebook reader about this community garden on Packe Street – which was described as looking like someone’s backyard. And the garden certainly has that feel about it, there were even small children running around gathering berries.
Packe street is not far from the central city (easy walking distance to Bealey Avenue) and it has quite a mix of housing types from old villas to higher density apartment blocks and everything in between.
There is a sign at the front of the garden that says:
“This public garden is the first of its kind in Christchurch. It is a Council Reserve cultivated by local people. The fruit and vegetables belong to everyone; it’s a pick-your-own & leave-for-others garden.”
It’s quite a large park and I imagine it takes a lot of upkeep – there’s a sign that says there is a regular working-bee every Thursday afternoon.
The park has a lot of mature fruit trees. It’s another great community resource and if you live in the area I’d encourage you to check it out.
