A scenic view of Birdlings Flat beach, featuring a parking area with several vehicles, surrounded by gravel and rocky hills under a blue sky.

This is the beach at Birdlings Flat which is not far from the small town of Little River – about 40 minutes out of Christchurch on the way to Akaroa. As I am the owner of a shiny new bicycle, we headed out to the Little River Rail Trail to test the bike out. We cycled from Little River to Birdlings Flat (about 6km I think) and back again. It was a hot bike ride and I didn’t fancy taking the bike down into the shingle on the beach.

The rail trail follows Lake Forsyth (pictured above). I stopped briefly by the lake to check out the local bird-life and think I spotted a grebe though was not sure if it was crested one as it was too far off. Apparently, some have been spotted there.

Always fun with a new bike. And I would probably pay good money for a hot bike ride now, although it is actually 7C in Haninge today.

New bikes are always fun, but your pictures where enough to send me off on a new tangent for explorations online, sort of like a big treasure hunt.

I will have to admit that something about your pictures snapped in and around Birdlings Flat piqued my curiosity enough to look the place up on Google map’s satellite view and to zoom in for a look around in street view — spent a few hours getting familiar with the whole place from the exit to Birdlings Flat and back again, only to realise as I zoomed back out again in Google map’s satellite view that all that rich flat farm land to the west and south of Birdlings Flat was once under water during ancient times as it became obviously apparent when viewing the topography which revealed where the old beaches had once been. I believe I got way much more of a learning experience than I was expecting!

Now I know why there is a gemstone and fossil museum at the end of Hillview Road in Birdlings Flat.

Thanks! Your adventure with pictures sent me on quite an adventure too. 🙂

Wow, glad you got an adventure out of it too. The beach is quite desolate and I think it’s either a place you love or hate.
