The Lyttelton tunnel opened 50 years ago, so to celebrate, they closed the tunnel to vehicles for several hours this morning and invited people to walk and cycle through the tunnel. A big crowd turned up and it was fascinating watching the different types of bikes, scooters and skate boards going through. I walked both ways and it wasn’t until I was out of the tunnel that I realised just how loud it was in there.

Yes, they say 25,000 people walked through. Not bad for a city with 450,000 folk.

I was kinda figuring you’d be here after reading about this at News3NZ, and sure enough you didn’t disappoint. By the way, your pictures (along with your personal descriptions) are much better than those of the media, and I think that says something. I suspect a friend of mine from the northern suburbs of Christchurch also made it too, that is assuming she could take time off from her 60hr plus work schedule as she’s seriously into biking and hiking, so I’m waiting with bated breath for more pictures and an email from her too.
Ah, and I see the Wizard and his apprentices also made the trip up from Oamaru for a cameo appearance here too. The man is a legend and a living work of art, and the entertainment factor is way beyond compare! Besides, who could possibly make a cameo appearance for a Christmas edition of the TV show ‘What Now’ and not require a change of costume?!

Thanks Robert, I wonder if the media didn’t bother to actually walk through the tunnel! I did see one guy with a drone camera flying above the crowd. There were a few jokes shared between the people around us about ‘big brother’ watching us! It was certainly crowded and from some comments I’ve read online some people found it a bit stressful having to deal with cyclists, skateboarders and that many people. It’s just Christchurch people get used to having their own space too much!
