Cleared residential red zone land by New Brighton Road. It’s quite surreal to walk along this road and I’m not a local resident, so I can’t begin to imagine what it must be like if your home was once here. This land was ‘red zoned’ due to earthquake damage that meant the land could not be fit for rebuilding (the cost to restore the land being prohibitive). I’m not sure what will happen to the land in the future. The land around this area was so badly affected as it’s right by the Avon River.

I think this is the area that is being maintained by these volunteers – http://www.givealittle.co.nz/cause/brianandcolleenfairbairn.
