The Arcades

DSC01945

You can see the Arcades on what was the Crown Plaza site – opposite Victoria Square on corner of Durham & Kilmore Streets.

Here’s a good explanation of what the Arcade is all about:

The Arcades Project offers a dramatic and beautiful framework for temporary activity and an urban scale to any vacant site and its surrounds. This project was born from a desire for new ways to add movable infrastructure to empty sites for community and public events. Designed to be reconfigurable and relocatable, the structures have the potential to enliven vacant sites around Christchurch for the next 25 years. http://festa.org.nz/arcades-project

This product of Kiwi ingenuity is quite impressive — love the way it lines up perfectly with the Forsyth Barr Building too!

We could use something like this in my area but I suspect it would take a really sharp genius to cut through all the red tape necessary to get something like this going.
