I was in Merivale today and came across the demolition in progress on this church. I’m not sure when it started, as I’m not in Merivale very often. A church demolition is an all too common sight in Christchurch now. I don’t know much about the church’s history, except that it was built in 1894 according to the stone.

Getting around the city centre today was diabolically difficult due to road closures. I kept turning down closed roads and ended up doing some very strange routes around the city! So, if you don’t have to go into the CBD by car at the moment, I’d advise against it.

The fact that they plan to save the cornerstone tells me they plan to rebuild after the demolition. That’s a good sign in the midst of this ongoing mayhem!

This Church was previously Rugby St Methodist part of the St Albans Uniting Parish. Last I heard it was going to be restored but I guess from the photo that is no longer happening. I do hope it will be rebuilt in a similar style – such a beautiful building!
