Today has been a really warm and sunny winter’s day in Christchurch, so my partner and I took the opportunity to get out for a walk. We parked the car on a side street near the Heathcote River and then followed the river along Eastern Terrace all the way to Colombo Street where we had a coffee at the cafe in the library.

It’s a lovely picturesque walk by the river and along the way we encountered the comical looking Muscovy Ducks and several Monarch butterflies enjoying the sunshine.

It seems Muscovy Ducks have taken over the world as we have them in abundance here in North Carolina too! However we have no Cabbage trees (such as the one seen in the upper left picture). We have something remotely similar known as a Yucca which occurs in a number of different species, but none even come close to the beauty and height of New Zealand’s Cabbage trees and I believe our similar climate here could easily support them too. I find it odd that nobody has thought to introduce them here. *sigh*

Michelle, I will have thank you for including the Muscovy Duck in your collage as it inspired me to go on a mission to a local lake I hadn’t visited in years to fill up my camera’s card with enough pictures of Muscovy Ducks to have plenty to choose from for a perfect picture or two. One thing I never noticed until afterwards is that no two Muscovy Ducks have identical markings or colours, and after reading up on them some too, I now appreciate them much more. They do have a most fascinating history!
