We took the back way over the hills to Sumner today and stopped at Evans Pass to have a look at the view. The road down into Lyttelton is still closed, but you can drive to Sumner now.

They really do not want you going on this road. Quite frankly, you’d have to be quite mad to do so. We often wonder about the truck driver whose tanker was on this road at the time of the quake. Did he go back for the truck, or did someone else? I saw photos of it, but never heard anything more about it. It was one of the little side stories that intrigued us. Of course, we didn’t have power for weeks, so we missed a lot of media coverage of the earthquake.

We had a nice walk around Sumner today and I took quite a few pics. Sumner changes so much now.

After looking at some old photos a close friend of mine had sent to me in 2009 of Sumner beach from this same exact spot and comparing them to yours (although her’s had too much smog at the time to see the CBD in the background) — what a change!! Sumner hill has surely had some major rock slips and Shag Rock is now just a pile of rubble 😦

On the brighter side, in the background of your last photo, its really nice to finally see a portion of that huge 800 square quilt I have heard so much about that knitters from as far away as Britain, Germany, and Sweden had made. Quite a work of art it is! 🙂

As for the mountain biker you spotted, biking those hills takes heaps of stamina and is an excellent form of stress relief as those endorphins kick in too. For those thinking about taking up this sport, it takes lots of patience in order to get up to this level, but the benefits thereafter are more than well worth the effort, and the thought of quitting will be near impossible except perhaps when old age begins to take its toll …but even then a person will remain much better off physically than their counterparts.

Overall, this is a wonderful set of pictures you snapped this day, as always!
