A walk up the Hill

collage-new

A few cellphone snaps from my walk up the Mt Pleasant hill at lunchtime today. Love the sunflowers – which are a lot further on than mine are. The letterbox was amusing but sad – there’s not house on the section any-more, but there’s a fence in front of the section, so I suspect they’ve still been getting circulars through the box…

The sky is typical of our nor’wester days. It’s been hot here, about 30 degrees with a warm wind blowing from about lunchtime. Our northwesterly wind makes some people go a bit loopy, others get tired, some get invigorated. We always get stunning skies and sunsets on these days too.

The large red tree is a Pohutukawa – they are out in flower all over the hill now.

    Hi Michelle,

We were in NZ at the end of last year and spent a few days in Christchurch in December – what a lovely city, and what a great spirit of recovery. I discovered this blog after we’d left, but we managed to visit various parks, Akaroa and the Re:start mall.

Your lovely photos of summer are a delight now that I’m back in the northern winter.

I’ve always been fascinated by things native to NZ such as the Pohutukawa trees and have often wondered how they got established long before European settlement as there’s a lot of salt water ocean to cross (and survive), but they’re also only native to NZ now, and this makes it interesting! The cabbage tree (Cordyline australis) is another as I don’t think the seeds by themselves floating across so much ocean could have survived without human help aboard boats long before recorded history was ever thought of. Makes one to wonder if there were unrecorded visitors of whom there is now no trace from long before the M?ori arrived. Nature does have her mysteries!
