I don’t normally put myself in my photos! But for this one I thought why the heck not. It’s been a goal of mine to get fit enough (and light enough) to climb to the top of Mt Herbert which is 919m high. Today I achieved that goal. My partner and I climbed up the hill from the Kaituna Valley side. You start from the Valley and walk up to the Packhorse Hut (which is a 4km walk straight up hill). Once you get to the Packhorse Hut you climb up even further (another 4km) and go over the side of Orton Bradley. Parts of the track need you to be part goat! But it was a beautiful day and beautiful views at the top.
The view from the top of Mt Herbert – this is looking down onto the Port Hills and over them to the city and beyond to the Southern Alps. From the top of Mt Herbert you get 360 degree views – you can see down the coast towards Timaru and up the coast towards Kaikoura.
Looking over the hills to Lake Ellesmere and beyond that the Pacific Ocean.
