A seagull curiously inspecting its meal of shellfish on a driftwood log at Taylors Mistake beach.

I was at Taylors Mistake beach today to do some photography with some friends and thought I’d get the usual shots of flowers, beach, and drift wood. And then I came across this! It’s a log washed up and covered in some kind of shell fish that was still alive.  I really don’t know what they are – they have long tentacles that were moving and a shell at the end).  Kind of creepy actually (see photo below).  If you know what they are please leave a comment.  Whatever they were, this seagull was making quite a meal out of them! And not the least bit nervous of me.

    Hi Michelle
Sorry, I know very little of sea life of NZ, here in the UK I would be on pretty firm ground.
Thought you captured whatever it is really well though, nice pic.

I think they are barnacles, probably goose barnacles, so called because a long time ago people thought geese developed out of them. Can’t imagine why.

Hmmm, I can kind of understand why anyone would think something living would develop out of these! They were really weird and moving.
