cathedral-chalic-christchur.jpg

They think of the Cathedral in the Square right in the centre of Christchurch. Perhaps they also now think of the Chalice – the rather stunning sculpture to the right of the Cathedral.

Designed in the gothic revival style, the (Anglican) cathedral takes its name from the Oxford University college of Christ Church in the UK. Ceiling timbers of matai and totara come from Banks Peninsula and stone from nearby quarries. Art work around the walls express the different cultures – Maori, Polynesian and Pakeha – that make up the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia. See www.christchurchcathedral.co.nz

A beautiful church and an unusual sculpture; an equally unusual pairing, I think.

Beautiful shot. When I think of ChCh I think of Lyttelton and the peninsula, which I thought was just beautiful! (and the fact I was in the centre on a Sunday in the 1980s, and it was ….errr…..quiet. And the lovely banks of the Avon.

    the sculpture is beautiful!

I think the classic architechture of the cathedral on the background and a more modern looking piece on the foreground made it a fantastic combination!

    great capture 🙂

I’d never heard of the chalice but your beautiful beautiful photo makes me understand why it is becoming one of the city’s icon. Light and perspective, it’s brilliant!
    Cheers from Avignon!

Bizarrely I remember the chalice and not the cathedral from my last visit. How my memory can have missed the somewhat larger building is beyond me.

    Nice shot.

Don’t think the chalice was there in 2001. I remember the Wizard and the chessboard in Cathedral Square and the trams.

I’m not running with the theme this month but do stop by nonetheless

Thanks everyone for the lovely comments, I’ve enjoyed looking at everyone’s theme shots as well. I’ve been waiting for a while to take a good photo of the Cathedral, as for many months after starting this blog, the cathedral was partly covered in scaffolding. So this theme day was great timing.

I probably took around 30 shots from all different angles – it’s a popular photography subject as even at 7pm there were at least 6 others trying to get the same shot! We were all circling each other – wondering where the other was going to next!

Impressive photo. Hubby and I considers New Zealand as the 1st answer to ‘where would we live if we are not in Vienna’ discussion. Now, Christchurch might be a good choice! Thanks!

I was in Christchurch in January ’07, and those two structures are EXACTLY what I think of when I think of Christchurch. Also, the building that houses “Starbucks” that is in that same location. Its white and a rusty-red color, if I remember correctly.

    Great shot!
