This evening I attended my friend’s house-warming / birthday party. We had a kava ceremony, and here are several of her neighbours partaking in the kava drink. I’ve drunk kava in Fiji and it’s rather unpleasant tasting (muddy water is what most people describe it as) and it leaves you with a bit of a tingling sensation around the lips, and in my case the room also spun! The theme for the party was Hawaiian – hence the wearing of the lei!

In case you are wondering, it’s not common for Kiwis to drink kava – unless we are in Fiji or some of the other pacific islands. You can find out more about kava at Wikipedia
