they look like cabbages or lettuces to me but they certainly don’t look anything like the ones our local greengrocers supply so could well be something quite different.

It looks like Sempervivum arachnoideum. Sedum looks also like your plant. I am sure it is in the family Crassulaceae. You can goggle these funny names and find one exactly like the plant in the picture.
