Lion at Orana Park

lion

I waited for this shot. He was sleeping before this, but I thought he’d eventually realise he was being watched!

I did not know you had lions in New Zealand ! Is this park like a zoo or more like a reserve ?

Its a wildlife park – they are behind enclosures but the enclosures are quite big.

Its a reserve and a zoo, this boy and his brother are on lone from another zoo in New Zealand, his brother has been lucky enough to knock up two of Orana’s girls so far, there cubs are due in June. this man (who if you look closely will see hes missing an ear, his brother bit it off when they were cubs) hasn’t seemed to work out what to do with the girls yet lol.
The enclosures you see aren’t even half of whats behind the scene. Orana is massive and has a huge part in the captive breeding program of endangered and threatened animals world wide.
If your surprised they have Lions I bet you cant even imagine what else this park has alone, including over a dozen giraffes been successfully raised on site

What a beautiful photo! The colors, the composition, the contrast – I just love this – and, of course, THE LION!

What a great picture. How did you manage to get it with no mesh in front of it. Does anyone know what the name of this Lion is?

This lion and the other male are not brothers. Zulu (pictured) is the son of Auckland Zoo’s Amira and a male named Lazurus. He has 1 sister who now lives in South Austraila. Only weeks after Amira had her cubs her mother (Kura) produced 4 more cubs with another male named Ngala. One of these was Malik (the other male). Lazurus and Ngala have no blood relation although they were hand reared together in South Africa as cubs. Making these 2 Uncle and Nephew. Malik’s 2 sister’s now live with Zulu’s sister in South Australia.
