I walked up the Bridle Path track today for a bit of strenuous exercise (it’s rather steep). The reward is always the view of Lyttelton and the harbour.

It certainly looks steep, but affords a wonderful view. Why is it called the “Bridle Path”?

According to Wikipedia “A bridle path, also bridleway, equestrian trail, horse riding path, bridle road, or horse trail, is a path, trail or a thoroughfare that is used by people riding on horses.” This specific track was how the early settlers brought all of their belongings into Christchurch – they walked everything over with horses. Quite a feat in Victorian clothing after six months in a boat!

But it’s a win-win. You get a good workout AND a great view and picture.

Beautiful view of Lyttelton from the top of Bridle Path!
Just curious if you saw any extremely fit and energetic souls taking their mountain bikes up this track?

No, I didn’t. In fact I don’t think I have ever. It’s very steep and the shingle is very slippery in places.
